Changing Chairs

Having spent the last couple of years as West Midlands Regional Rep, I have swapped seats to become Deputy Chair of the Writers’ Guild of Great Britain. I was elected (unopposed) alongside Richard Pinner (former East Midlands Rep) as the other Deputy. Roger William continues as Chair. This is means that all three senior officials on the Executive Council hail from outside London. It has been a real pleasure to represent the West Midlands and hope to use this new position to continue to promote and expand opportunities around our nations and regions. www.writersguild.org.uk

Bold Text Playwrights Theatre

Bold Text at The REP

Bold Text Square LogoA few months ago I joined a collective of six other writers to create Bold Text Playwrights. Our first performance of rehearsed readings will on Monday 7th April at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre.

Bold Text aims to create more opportunities and platforms for mid-career writers in the West Midlands. We are collaborating with the REP’s ‘Open Door’ pilot scheme to present three evenings of new work. An extract of my new play ‘Liberal Guilt’ will be performed on April 7th:

Leanne and Polly are best friends. They also both work for the Lib Dems. When the coalition is formed one leaves and one stays. But what is the point of principles without power – and what is the worth of power if you compromise all your principles? Based on firsthand experience and interviews with senior party members ‘Liberal Guilt’ looks at the future of party politics if we choose to abandon it.

Further details can be found on the Bold Text website: http://boldtextcollective.wordpress.com/

You can book your FREE ticket by visiting: http://www.birmingham-box.co.uk/event/open-door/

Bold Text @ Open Door is funded by Arts Council England

Archers Episode Wins Award

Pal Aron who plays maths teacher Iftikar Shah has won the 2013 Celebrity Champion Award from the Council For Learning Outside The Classroom.

When Freddy Pargetter was struggling with his maths lessons, his mother employed Iftikar to give him extra tuition. Recognising that Freddy was an active boy, Iftikar felt Freddy would learn more through applying maths to real-life situations he used a range of activities to help Freddy engage with maths. Together, they explored the Lower Loxley estate, looking at the geometry of buildings, solving maths problems related to horses and horse riding, and even using maths during a visit to a theme park. Within a year, Freddy had found that he quite enjoyed maths, he caught up with his peers, and no longer needed extra tuition.

On receiving his award Pal commented “I’m thrilled to receive the LOtC award. It was a joy to collaborate with director Kim Greengrass on Tim Stimpson’s script and I’m glad that the Ifty and Freddy storyline on The Archers has been recognised in this way.”

Other nominees included Dara O’Briain and Mr Tumble from CBeebies!

Abridge Extra Returns

Ambridge_extra_logoWriting for a show like ‘Ambridge Extra’, one starts to have a strange reaction to current events. While embarking on Series 3 and the story involving Phoebe’s trip to South Africa we worried about the possibility of Nelson Mandela’s death. Not because of his global standing, but because we were worried about the effect it might have on our little show. However, we weren’t anticipating any such problems when we decided to start of Series 5 in Istanbul.

Somewhere on an audio file in the bowels of the BBC there are scenes with glorious sound effects recorded live in the Grand Bazaar, in mosques and in the bustling streets of Taksim. I know Istanbul fairly well so was excited about hearing it come to life on-air.  When the protests kicked off I kept checking the news, hoping that they would abate, forgetting completely that there were rather more important issues at stake. Eventually though, I had to accept that whatever happened it would be unlikely that Matt and Lilian would still go there – or that it wouldn’t pull focus away from our story. The whole production team did an amazing job, rewriting, recording and re-editing four episodes in only a couple of weeks. And I now know much more about Montenegro!

But why send Matt and Lilian to Istanbul in the first place? At the start of every series we meet for a brainstorming session. Our golden rule is that the tail mustn’t wag the dog, so we have to consider which characters we can use without disrupting storylines that have already been gridded for ‘The Archers’. However, we also want to use characters that we think listeners will want follow.  As it happens we only mentioned Matt and Lilian briefly. We knew the end of Lilian’s affair with Paul would be a great jumping off point – and that they would be popular characters – but we didn’t have story idea. It was only at the end of the meeting that Jeremy Howe (Commissioning Editor) challenged us to, “Send Matt to Russia”.

My fellow writer, Sarah Bradshaw, and I set out doing our research, talking to journalists and even (minor) oligarchs.  At the same time we had to remember that although Russia might provide an intriguing setting, our overarching story must always be Matt and his relationship with Lilian. Fortunately, Matt doesn’t like dwelling on his emotions and always uses action as a way of working them through – even more so where money is involved. The possibility of doing the deal of his life in Russia and regaining his virility might be too much to resist. There are plenty of wealthy Russians in Istanbul so why not send Matt and Lilian on holiday there?

So as Matt prepares to leave Montenegro rather than Istanbul, we can only keep our fingers crossed that real events won’t interfere again with our little, but I hope very gripping, tale.

Turning On The Tap

At the end of last year I was asked to answer questions about my job for the arts charity Ideas Tap. The interview has now been published in their ‘Job of the Week’ section, which you can read here.

Ideas Tap was set up to help creative, young people at the start of their career. They provide funding, advice and support, as well as brokering potential collaborations. Amongst the major organisations they’ve partnered with are the British Film Institute, the National Youth Theatre, the Old Vic and Magnum Photos. Career paths into the creative industries can often seem unclear and daunting, so it was pleasure to be able to pass on what small crumbs of wisdom I may have gained over the last ten years.

Extra Extra

Following two successful series last year, Ambridge Extra has been recommissioned for 2012. There will be two more twenty episode series – the first starting in July on BBC Radio 4 Extra.  Keri Davies and I are back on board for Series 3, but this time we’ll be joined by seasoned Archers writers, Simon Frith and Caroline Harrington. And unlike last time when we wrote each series in blocks over three months, this time we’ll be writing the entire series all in one go. Unfortunately I’m not available to write Series 4, but given that I’ll have done three in a row I could probably do with the break! In the meantime, you can hear me back on The Archers . I’m in the process of writing my next batch of scripts now, which will be broadcast on BBC Radio 4 from 13th – 18th May.

Ambridge Extra bows out for 2011

Well it’s certainly been a very exciting year. Starting with nothing but a blank sheet of paper, we’ve created two successful seasons of ‘Ambridge Extra’ for BBC Radio 4 Extra. That’s fifty-two episodes of which I’ve written half.

Having had the privilege of writing the very first two weeks, I also have responsibility for the final fortnight which starts this Tuesday (20th December). Will Daniel discover what’s been going on between his father and his girlfriend Erin? How will Amy react to the truth about her mother? And will Santa bring any unwelcome presents to Ambridge?

This season has been a pleasure to write. Producers Rosie Bolton and Sara Conkey, who are more used to working in documentary, introduced the innovation of the ‘thought voice’. These interior monologues allowed us to get inside the heads of Archers characters in a way that we’ve never been able to before. The series also seems to have gone down well with listeners and we’ve retained our 4 1/2 star rating on iTunes.

So as 2011 draws to a close, what will 2012 bring? ‘Ambridge Extra’ was originally only commissioned for two series as part of ‘The Archers’ 60th Anniversary celebration. I can’t confirm anything about the future, but watch this space….

In the meantime, have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

‘Ambridge Extra’ is broadcast at 2:15pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays on Radio 4 Extra. An omnibus is broadcast on Sundays at 11:15am. Episodes are also available on iPlayer and podcast.

Radio Feedback

The first series of Ambridge Extra finished last week and it was gratifying to hear some great listener comments on Radio 4’s Feedback today. Ross Ashley said:

“They promised us a powerful end to the series and it really was very good.”

While Paul Hopkins remarked:

“I’m very sad that ‘Ambridge Extra’ is ended. I enjoyed the series and found it excellent in both respects of a stand-alone series and how well it linked into the main ‘Archers’ storyline. I hope a second series is commissioned.”

Meanwhile on iTunes the podcast ended up with an average of 4.5 out of 5 stars. My favourite  comment was from testing123123:

“Just got into AE and am now dependent on it as part of my Archers “fix”. Bring back soon! There are more cold turkeys out here than in the Grundy’s Shed at Xmas.”

The good news is that we’re starting work on the second series in a couple of weeks time. We have two new members on the team in the form of Rosie Boulton and Sara Conkey and will be taking a slightly different artistic direction this time around. I just hope writing this series will be as exciting and satisfying as writing the first.

In the meantime, if you’d like hear the item on Feedback it’s available until July 15th by clicking here.
